 Free of the stupid disks!

Although this DVD-R offers some advanced features, it is priced in the range of a casual user and this is a casual user review. There are some good "techie" reviews on Amazon but I don't do anything complicated with a DVD-R and this review is for anyone like me looking for a good, easy to use machine for recording TV and watching movies.  Terrific Recorder

This is the best DVD recorder I've had. It even has features I haven't used, such as freezing live TV. It makes great recordings. I usually record onto DVDs but there are times when there are two or three programs in succession, I record to the hard drive for those. I can either watch them from the hard drive or transfer them later to a DVD. I usually transfer my HDD recordings to a DVD because I usually watch TV on a big screen and home theatre sound system a Blu-Ray player. Must see to believe!

After careful consideration and research, I bought this DVR for my 50" plasma TV. I am so glad I did!! Let's run down the reasons why.

1.) Setup... less than 4 minutes before I started pausing live TV.
2.) Built-in hard drive allows you to save your DVD discs with 64 hours of HD recording, but you can get more out of your hard drive by reducing the quality of your videos.
3.) Built-in video editor! Holy hell batman!! You can mark off chapters and delete them by scene deletion mode, which then cuts your video and hard disc space used. I can tell you, as a video editor myself, the time it takes to delete a scene and scrunch a movie back together takes a while, but this DVR... a few seconds tops!  Read More

 Simply Awesome!



The Magnavox MDR513h/F7 HDD and DVD Recorder with Digital Tuner is the first DVR I'm going to review -- 'cause it's the one I bought.

Do you already have some form of digital TV coming into your house? (It can be cable or broadband or even just digital broadcast.) You don't want another expensive monthly bill like you would have with Tivo or another service? You just want to be able to record shows and watch them later?

This might just be the best DVR for you.

Here's the deal in a nutshell. This DVR will let you record directly to the hard disk. Programming it for timer recording is pretty easy; you just press timer on the remote and follow the prompts. Playing back is just as easy. Just press play, then you use the controls on the remote to fast forward or rewind to find the exact place you want to start watching.

There are lots of other advanced features, but we've been using our Magnavox DVR since Christmas and haven't used any of them yet. You can record to DVDs. You can start watching a show that's being broadcast, then 15 minutes in, if you decide you want to record it and watch later, you can record -- from the beginning of the program!

You can start watching a show, then rewind in that show you're watching -- say you missed a crucial punch line or something -- even if you weren't recording the show.

If this seems like magic, it's not -- most of today's DVRs have a buffer where they automatically record what you're watching. You just have to be watching through the DVR's built-in digital tuner instead of using the tuner in your tv.

This works whether you have cable, broadband, or digital tv. You just hook up the unit so that the DVR is between your antenna or cable box and your tv. That way, the incoming signal to your house goes through the DVR, where the DVR can record the signal while you watch.

Ok, enough technical stuff.

So this DVR is $200. The 320 GB Hard Disk lets you record up to 387 hours of your favorite shows and movies. The only negative thing is that the remote control is poorly laid out and hard to use. But my experience has been that there are only a few buttons on there that I ever use. Once I learned where they are, I was all set.

Most DVRs will let you record one program while watching another, or even rewind a show that you're watching live, while still recording it in real time.

DVR Recorders Advanced Features

What are some advanced features that you might want to look for? Some DVRs will let you search recorded shows by the name of the program, or even the actors that appear in the program. Usually these DVRs require that you subscribe to a service, like TIVO. When you subscribe to a service like this, you can even do things like automatically recording all episodes of your favorite show, regardless of what time or channel they are on. You can even record all movies featuring your favorite actor, or all movies by a certain director.
